Lee Wilbur’s fine joinery matched with the Newman 46’s sea-kindly hull make MITRA an exceptionally handsome and capable long-range cruiser. Her sole owner, a licensed skipper and member of the CCA, applied his many years of offshore experience to make her strong, comfortable and independent of the shore, in the interest of marine research. Voyaging from Newfoundland to the Dry Tortugas in fair weather and foul has proven her capabilities. MITRA’s interior reflects special attention to the details of creature comfort and ease of maintenance. Oil-finished southern cypress paneling and trim with natural cane locker fronts, make her bright and airy below. Passage doors and bulkheads are sound insulated. Her salon windows are quarter-inch tempered glass thru-bolted and her many opening ports and hatches are heavy Lexan by Bomar. All hardware below is brass or bronze, which together with a western fir cabin sole caulked with 3-M give her a traditional “shippy” appearance. A four-burner gas Shipmate with oven and broiler and butcher-block counter with deep sink make MITRA’s midship galley a cook’s delight. An upright Norcold AC/DC reefer-freezer plus racked service for eight complete her well-appointed galley. MITRA provides exceptional comfort and quiet privacy for two couples, each with head and shower, plus two/three occasional berths in the salon. With 1000 gallons of fuel, 200 gallons of water (plus water-maker) and redundant maintenance systems, MITRA has cruising capabilities few boats her size possess. As rugged as she is handsome, she will appeal strongly to those who admire traditional Down East craftsmanship and classic style.
