She is a modern performance yacht with elements of traditional styling. She has been designed to perform exceptionally well with little effort. Her slightly flared bows turn elegantly into a tumble home stern and, combined with a low freeboard, gives her a sleek and distinctive “Herreshoff” look. Below the waterline she is equipped with a state of the art under body and appendices. Moondance39 radiates style and performance.
Moondance39 is build over a male frame with Western Red Cedar strip plank (45mm by 18mm planks) epoxy bonded. She is sheathed on the exterior and interior with e-glass. SP-Systems epoxy resins are used throughout. Bulkheads (15mm marine ply) and internal furniture (9mm) are bonded to the hull and epoxy coated. The deck and coach roof is marine ply epoxy sheathed and painted. All internal structures were designed to act as structural components. The hull and deck forms an immensely strong but light monocoque structure. This structure was post-cured.
The keel and rudder are of a composite construction. The keel is removable (for ease of transportation) using a socket system. The bulb of 1600kg is an America’s Cup derivative and attached to the keel with bolts. The rudder-stock is solid aluminium and the blades strengthened with carbon fibre.
The cockpit is gigantic. Two sofa-like seats measuring 2.6m by 0.6m surrounds a large and open cockpit floor only broken by the large tiller and main sail track. The internal arrangement is minimalistic and comfortable. A large double fore-berth extends into two saloon seats and a galley and heads. The navigation area is similar to that found on open 60’s; it is workmanlike and comfortable.
